The club would win its first Ligue 1 championship in 2002, thus beginning an unprecedented run, both in France and in Europe, of seven consecutive titles as league champion. In addition to the league titles, the club would go on to win the Coupe de France (2008, 2012), the Trophée des champions (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2012) and for the first time the Coupe de la Ligue de France (2001).

The Saint-Étienne rivalry began during the 1960s when Lyon took up permanent residence in the French top flight. The Arpitan rivalry is due to the proximity of the two clubs, separated by only 38 miles, as well as the historical social and cultural difference between the two cities where they are based; Lyon is cited as more upper class, while Saint-Étienne is cited as more working class. The derby also pits the “most successful recent French club” (Lyon) against “the previously biggest French club” (Saint-Étienne) and is often cited as one of the high points of the Ligue 1 season.

The salary reduction will range from 4% to 25% and will be implemented between February and June 2021. In addition, the shares that will be given to both players and employees of the club will be priced at €2.22 each.

“Olympique Lyonnais is pleased to have reached an agreement with the sportsmen who, today, already represent 50% of the staff, which demonstrates a collective drive and the excellent mood that reigns at the club,” commented the club’s president himself, Jean-Michel Aulas.
