But Madrid fans are also known by the nickname of “Vikingos” (Vikings), although from other fans, such as the Atlético fans, it is used in a pejorative way. The reason is rather more complex, with two versions:

The first goes back to 1960, when the Real Madrid of Di Stefano, Gento, Puskas, etc. won their fifth European Cup by beating Eintracht Frankurt 7-3. The chronicle of the English newspaper “The Times” headlined the news by comparing the white team with the Vikings, on the grounds that “they were devastating wherever they went”.

The legend says that the Christian saint was captured by the Romans and thrown to the lions in the circus show, however the young man managed to tame the beasts and avoided being devoured. This legend of the saint and the lions was associated with the fury and fierceness of the athletic players and, by resemblance, with their faithful fans.

The other nickname, “Palanganas”, was initially used in a pejorative way by fans of their local rivals, Real Betis Balompié, in response to “Verdolagas”, used by the Sevillistas with the same intentions, although over time, a good part of both fans have ended up assuming it and even identifying with them. Another part of the fans, and even of the institution, still considers the term pejorative and feels offended when they are referred to as such. Here we limit ourselves to telling the story of its origin, as there are several theories:
